Red Bull Streets of San Francisco launches athletes to speeds of over 60 mph…an inch off the pavement!
Press Release | Speed Sheet | Tom Mason | Event Summary

[Event Summary: Final Results]

Energizing the City by the Bay
July 8, 2000, forty-eight of the world's best street lugers, representing more than seven countries, will descend upon the streets of San Francisco for one of the most adrenaline-pumping street luge competitions in the world. The Red Bull Streets of San Francisco will pit the fastest street lugers against one another in a test of bravery, skill and brain damage.

Steets
The .4-mile racecourse barrels straight down Deharo Street, in the heart of San Francisco. Beginning at Southern Heights and ending at Mariposa Street, this course kicks the sport up to another level by incorporating three huge big-air jumps, guaranteed to send the world's best street lugers soaring through the air at ridiculous speeds of over 60 MPH! In addition, to earning the coveted Red Bull Streets of San Francisco title, competitors will also be gunning for a piece of the $10,000 prize purse. The Red Bull Streets of San Francisco is the only street luge race in the history of the sport offering three big-air jumps.

History Lesson
Evolving from skateboarding, street luge has taken on a life and an identity of its own. What began as primitive wooden decks has progressed to state-of-the-art aluminum boards. Known as one of the most dangerous sports in the world, Red Bull Streets of San Francisco is sure to get everyone's adrenaline racing!

Competitors
Guinness World Speed Record holder and California resident Tom Mason, headlines the field of competitors also featuring: Dave Rogers, the 1999 X-Games four-man Champion and 2000 Red Bull DHX Champion; Dennis Dreammeler, the 1999 X-Games six-man Champion; Sean Mallard, the 1999 four-man Gravity Games Champion and Pam Zoolalian, the top women's street luger in the world. "This sport is all about the rush and excitement you get from being so close to the edge of disaster that you can taste it," said Tom Mason, who placed third at 2000 Red Bull DHX in Cape town, South Africa earlier this year. "No other event in the world has such an A-list of competitors that this event does and no other event has three natural big-air jumps," added Mason.

Race Format
The main race is made up of two heats, a four-person and six-person competition. Street lugers leave the start gate and careen down the asphalt within arms length of each other. The top two lugers in each heat advance to the next round. Winners will be crowned in the four-person heat and six-person heats. In an effort to break from the conventional, Red Bull Streets of San Francisco will use three natural "dips" along the course as big air jumps. The street luger who soars the highest and furthest off these jumps will be crowned the Big-Air Champion. The San Francisco course is like no other street luge course in the world. The straight shot down Deharo Street, with its three big-air jumps, challenges the best street lugers to use all their skill as they are thrown through the air, making this spectacular event a game of attrition between athlete and their equipment.
