[Event Summary: Final Results]

Luging Your Mind in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, California (JULY 8, 2000) - Today the residents of San Francisco were exposed to the adrenaline-fueled world of street luge. Forty-eight of the world's best street lugers came to the heart of the city to compete in the 2000 Red Bull Streets of San Francisco. The cityscape served as the backdrop for the unique .4-mile racecourse. The straight shot down Deharo Street incorporated three big-air jumps, sending the competitors soaring through the air while topping speeds of 60 MPH.

Four-Man Format

The lugers careened down the asphalt within arms length of each other in four-man heats. Through elimination the field of forty-eight was cut to a final-four, ensuring the best race was yet to come. In the closest run of the day, Lee Dansie of Bellview, WA raced away with the 2000 Red Bull Streets of San Francisco title and a first place prize of $1,000. "We had the best riders in the world here, everyone was going big today. We were flying high and having a good time," said Dansie.

Landing on Asphalt

The big air event boosted the energy level of the day by adding a ramp to the second dip in the course. Those who dared soared through the air reaching distances over 70 feet. Capturing the Big Air title and a prize purse of $500, Jeff Schonzeit of Henderson, NV, set a world record by traveling a remarkable 83-feet in the air. Bob Pereyra of Northridge, CA took home $100 and the coveted title for having the most dramatic crash of the big air competition.

End of the Street

The 2000 Red Bull Streets of San Francisco showcased the world's best street lugers, local bands and DJs providing a festive feel throughout the day. The event was highlighted with the rush and excitement of street lugers, mountainboarders and skateboarders racing through the streets of San Francisco at ridiculous speeds.

Red Bull Streets of San Francisco will be nationally televised
on the USA Network, July 29, 2000 at 11:00am PST.
